Liverpool Won't Be Signing Aubameyang This Summer & There's a Major Reason Why

Liverpool are reportedly unlikely to sign Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this summer, that's despite recent gossip from France suggesting that a €70m bid could be in the offing, as a result of his past relationship with Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds have been tirelessly linked with a whole host of players that Klopp formerly worked with at Dortmund ever since he arrived at Anfield in 2015.

None of the rumours - be it Mats Hummels, Robert Lewandowski, Marco Reus - have ever materialised, though, and Aubameyang isn't about to buck the trend, even with the Reds seemingly willing to spend big ahead of a return to Champions League football in 2017/18.

Writing for The Times, noted Liverpool journalist Paul Joyce has revealed that 'sources in Germany' believe that Aubameyang and Klopp didn't particularly get along when they were working together.

It is perhaps worth noting that Aubameyang scored much more freely at Dortmund during two seasons under the management of Thomas Tuchel than under Klopp - he scored 41 times in 94 games for Klopp between 2013 and 2015, and 79 in 95 for Tuchel from 2015 to 2017.

Joyce's update on Aubameyang comes after former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol expressed severe doubt that the Gabonese international would even want to join the Reds anyway.

"If Aubameyang goes to Liverpool, I will be absolutely delighted," the 1984 European Cup Winner told ESPN earlier this week. "Why would Aubameyang pick Liverpool over any other team? I would love to see it happen, but I don't believe it's going to happen."

It remains to be seen exactly where Aubameyang will be playing his football next season. A move to Paris Saint-Germain looked a near certainty until it was rumoured that the Ligue 1 giants would be focusing their efforts on landing Kylian Mbappe from Monaco instead.

Manchester City are the club now most prominently linked with Aubameyang.
