Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has urged Sergio Ramos to remain with Los Blancos and ‘continue to rewrite the history books’ for as long as he can after the 34-year-old scored his 100th goal for the club during Tuesday’s 3-2 Champions League win over Inter.

With five La Liga crowns, four Champions League trophies, two Copa del Rey titles and four FIFA Club World Cups, Ramos is among the most decorated players in Real history.

He has played over 650 games since arriving in 2005 and his century of goals is a remarkable accomplishment for a centre-back. Many of his goals have also carried great importance, not least the late equaliser that forced extra-time in the 2014 Champions League final.

“Just the small matter of 100 goals,” Zidane said, via RealMadrid.com, after the Inter clash.

“We know just what a great player he is and I'm delighted because tonight was really important for us, as he always with his, with his goal. He's our captain, our leader and of course we want him to be with us forever. What's more, that's what he's doing, showing that he's always got that desire and I'm in no doubt that he's going to stay here and will continue to rewrite the history books.”

Ramos himself still prioritises team success over individual feats, although he appreciates that his contributions have been so widely applauded upon reaching the milestone.

“Individual records are secondary, but it's nice when your achievements, effort and sacrifices over the course of so many years are recognised,” the player commented.

“It's not every day you get your 100th goal and all the more so when you're a defender. As long as they help us to win games and bring positive things to the team, I'll be really happy. Here's hoping I get many more.”

Ramos is already the highest scoring defender in both Real and La Liga history, while he is remarkably the joint eighth all-time leading goalscorer with the Spain national team on 23.
