Xavi has asked Barcelona fans to stop booing Ousmane Dembele, after the forward was again jeered as he sat on the bench during his side's 4-2 win over Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

Dembele has been the subject of a tiresome contract saga over the past few months with the forward's current deal set to expire at the end of the season.

Barça issued several ultimatums to the Frenchman before finally admitting defeat and publicly stating that they would be looking to sell him in the January transfer window. However, no move materialised with Dembele now expected to depart for nothing in the summer.

The situation has not won the player many friends among match-going Barcelona supporters and this weekend jeers again echoed around the Camp Nou when his name was read out. Dembele was named on the substitutes bench against Atletico but did not get on.

Nevertheless, after the game his manager called on fans to support the player for the rest of his Barcelona career.

"I would like to ask the fans to please stop whistling at Dembele. He is one more in the group - they did it today, now please stop," he said.

"We need to support our team, our players," Xavi added.

The victory was a significant one for Barcelona as they look to secure a top-four finish this season. The three points moved them above Atleti to fourth, with new signings Adama Traore and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang making their debuts.
