Manchester United weren't at their best but had just about enough left in the tank to outlast Everton and win 2-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday lunchtime.

The Red Devils were in desperate need of a result after last Sunday's harrowing defeat to rivals Manchester City. Some fans might have liked to have seen a performance to go with it but we can't all get what we want.

Two first-half penalties ultimately separated the sides and United were able to cling on to secure three precious points.

Despite starting on the back-foot, United were gifted the chance to go ahead when James Tarkowski tripped Alejandro Garnacho in the 18-yard box.

Bruno Fernandes stepped up and slotted home from the spot to become United's all-time leading penalty scorer.

Garnacho continued to be the thorn in Everton's side and soon after won another penalty, this time being hauled down by Ben Godfrey.

This time, it was Marcus Rashford's turn to take from 12 yards, and he sent England teammate Jordan Pickford the wrong way to put United two goals up.

After the break, Everton boss Sean Dyche threw on Dominic Calvert-Lewin in search of a goal, but once more his shooting boots were missing.

The visitors proved toothless in front of goal despite registering a staggering 23 shots on their latest trip to Old Trafford.

Despite holding on to secure a clean sheet and more importantly the victory, United did not impress many neutrals or even their own fans.

The result moves United back to within eight points of fourth-placed Aston Villa and three of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who will meet on Sunday at Villa Park. Do Erik ten Hag's men still have a chance of reaching the Champions League?
