Manchester City will take on Real Madrid in the standout tie of the Women’s Champions League second round.

Round two is the final hurdle before the group stage kicks off, meaning at least one European giant will miss out on the competition proper.

Elsewhere, Lyon - who had won five Champions Leagues on the bounce prior to last season - have been drawn against Levante.

Five-time finalists and two-time winners Wolfsburg will play Bordeaux, while Juventus face a long trip to Albanian side Vllaznia. Meanwhile, Glasgow City are taking on Switzerland’s Servette FC Chenois. Benfica against Dutch champions FC Twente is another interesting matchup.

The first legs of the ties will be played on either Tuesday 31 August or Wednesday 1 September. This will be followed by the return games on Tuesday 8 September or Wednesday 9 September.

There are 12 ties in total with the winners over two legs joining Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and holders Barcelona in the groups. This foursome have earned automatic progression by winning the domestic titles in the 1-3 ranked UEFA nations or, in Barça’s case, by winning the last competition.

After the 16 group stage participants are decided, they will be seeded in four pots with the draw set to take place on Monday 13 September.

Barça will be confident of retaining their title this season after they embarrassed the Blues in the 2021 final, scoring all their goals before the break in a thumping 4-0 win. However, the chasing pack is strong.
