Wolves close to appointing Bruno Lage as new manager

Wolves' hunt for a new manager is almost over with former Benfica boss Bruno Lage on the verge of taking the reins at Molineux.

The club have been in the market for a successor to Nuno Espirito Santo ever since the Portuguese tactician announced he would be leaving at the end of the season.

Having secured promotion back to the Premier League during his first season at the club, Nuno guided Wolves to consecutive seventh place finishes in the top flight - their best final league standings since 1980.

An underwhelming 13th-place finish last season saw him announce he would be stepping down from the role and Wolves now look to be on the verge of announcing his successor, with BBC Sport reporting that former Benfica manager Bruno Lage's appointment is nearing ever closer.

The 45-year-old was required to gain FA approval to work in England following post-brexit guidelines, and now that has been confirmed the club are looking to discuss the finer details of the deal.

Lage has previously worked in England having spent time at Sheffield Wednesday where he was assistant to Carlos Carvalhal, before following his countryman to Swansea in 2017.

Carvalhal's dismissal from the Swans saw Lage take his first step into management with the Benfica reserve side, before being promoted to first-team boss just six months later.

Lage led Benfica to the Portuguese title during his first season at the helm, though he stepped down from the role little over a year after winning his first trophy as a manager after overseeing Benfica's worst ever run of results.

A whole host of names have been thrown into the mix of candidates to be the next Wolves manager, with Frank Lampard and Scott Parker both mentioned, though it seems the club will appoint another Portuguese coach following the success they experienced under Nuno.
