Wolves have confirmed former Benfica boss Bruno Lage is their new head coach, replacing fellow countryman Nuno Espirito Santo at Molineux.

Nuno stepped down at the end of the 2020/21 season after four years in charge of Wolves, with Lage now tasked with guiding the club back into the top half of the Premier League next season.

The 45-year-old won the Primeira Liga title with Benfica within a few months of taking over at the club in what was the first head coach job of his lengthy career.

Lage has also previously worked in British football as an assistant to Carlos Carvalhal at both Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea between 2015 and 2019.

He is noted for his work helping to develop young players and has been an influential figure in the careers of Joao Felix, Ruben Dias and Carlos Vinicius, among others.

"I want to create a good dynamic of group, with my staff, with all the departments of the club. I have tried to link all together to start to build up the new cycle," Lage told Wolves.co.uk about his ambitions and targets for his new club.

“I think it’s a good opportunity to understand what Nuno did in these four years and my ambition is to continue and to improve what he did.

"I was [in the UK] for three years, so I know Wolves, but now, the best thing to do – the next thing to do – is to know everyone better.

“That includes the club, the fans, and also to try to create a plan, just not for the next game or the next training, but for the future. That’s why for me, it’s very important to create that dynamic of teamwork here in this building; to try to realise what we are doing in the future.”
