Shandon Baptiste's red card made life hard for Brentford, but they still had enough about them to secure a 2-0 win over a sloppy Wolves side on Saturday.
The first half was the Ivan Toney show. The Brentford hitman opened the scoring from the penalty spot after being hauled down and he had the ball in the back of the net twice more, only to see those efforts correctly ruled out for offside and handball.
Toney turned provider for Brentford's second after 35 minutes, bursting down the wing and slotting the ball across goal for partner-in-crime Bryan Mbeumo to tap into an empty net and give Brentford an imposing lead at the end of a first half in which Wolves enjoyed plenty of possession but were incredibly sloppy in the final third.
The second half got off to another frantic start. Mbeumo skied an effort after pouncing on a Ruben Neves mistake, before Adama Traore's cross came agonisingly close to dropping into the net.
Wolves were offered a route back into the game shortly after the hour mark when Baptiste was shown his second yellow card, and only a stunning block from Kristoffer Ajer prevented Hwang Hee-chan from scoring almost immediately after.
Predictably, Wolves continued to press in an attempt to make the most of their numerical advantage but simply could not find a way through. They lacked quality in the final third all game long, failed to have a single shot on target, and were made to pay.
Wolves player ratings
1. Goalkeeper & defenders
Jose Sa (GK) - 4/10 - All at sea as Brentford rained down on his goal. Was caught scuffing the penalty spot for Toney's opener and didn't cover himself in glory at all.
Max Kilman (CB) - 4/10 - Played far too advanced and was mauled by Toney over and over again. Couldn't get anywhere near the Brentford forwards. Not good enough for the second goal.
Conor Coady (CB) - 4/10 - Another of those to be thumped by Toney. Looked too slow against Brentford's fast attackers and couldn't make up for it with all his shouting.
Romain Saiss (CB) - 3/10 - Forgot to do any actual defending for the second goal. Must have Mbeumo in his fantasy team. Understandably hooked at half-time.
Nelson Semedo (RM) - 4/10 - Didn't want any part of Toney and refused to do any defending because of it. Left Kilman for dead.
Ruben Neves (CM) - 5/10 - Played too high up for a player who is better in a deeper role. Couldn't cope with Brentford's three-man midfield and was kicked about the pitch in the first half.
Joao Moutinho (CM) - 3/10 - Didn't even realise he was playing.
Marcal (LM) - 3/10 - The hype surrounding his solid start to the season is over now. Foolishly gave away the penalty and offered Traore absolutely no help in attack. Brentford could stick three or four defenders on the winger because they knew they didn't need to watch out for Marcal.
Francisco Trincao (RW) - 4/10 - Looked as though he only wanted the ball to feet and was reluctant to run in search of space. Brentford just left him to it out wide.
Raul Jimenez (ST) - 2/10 - His only contribution in the first 85 minutes was a failed rabona. Should have scored a late header but sent his effort wide.
Adama Traore (LW) - 7/10 - The only Wolves player who actually wanted this. Created so many half-chances but nobody around him was on his wavelength. Even he isn't strong enough to carry an entire team.
Hwang Hee-chan - 6/10 - Should have started the game and proved that with his energy in the second half. Did all he could but failed to make a significant impact.
Daniel Podence - 5/10 - Had the longest warm-up in the world and yet still didn't seem ready to play.
Fabio Silva - N/A

5. Goalkeeper & defenders
David Raya (GK) - 6/10 - A nice day out for Raya. Might not even have to wash his kit.
Kristoffer Ajer (CB) - 6/10 - Was given the job of man-marking Traore in the first half but found it incredibly tough. Spun by the Spaniard concerningly often. Redeemed himself with a goal-saving challenge after the red card.
Pontus Jansson (CB) - 7/10 - A little sloppy with the ball at his feet but nothing too problematic. Made a huge block in the second half and enjoyed winding up the Wolves forwards. Jimenez didn't give him much work to do.
Ethan Pinnock (CB) - 7/10 - The most comfortable of Brentford's back three. Barely broke a sweat dealing with Trincao.
Sergi Canos (RM) - 5/10 - A noticeable weak link in attack for Brentford. Didn't make the right runs and was caught out a little too often at the back. Traore was feasting.
Shandon Baptiste (CM) - 4/10 - Wasn't involved too much and was foolishly shown a second yellow card just seconds before he was about to be substituted. Inexplicable.
Christian Norgaard (CM) - 8/10 - Subtly excellent at the base of Brentford's midfield. Seemed to break up absolutely everything and was clever with his passing.
Vitaly Janelt (CM) - 7/10 - Like Baptiste, did his job of keeping Moutinho and Neves quiet, and was clearly focused on helping Henry deal with Traore after the break.
Rico Henry (LM) - 6/10 - Could have done a little more in attack but looked a little too scared of the threat of Traore and Hwang in the second half. Had a tough time of it but nothing fatal.
Bryan Mbeumo (ST) - 7/10 - Has a telepathic understanding with Toney. Seemed to be in the right place to collect every flick-on and gave Wolves a few scares with his energy.
Ivan Toney (ST) - 8/10 - Absolutely outstanding in the first half. Could have had a hat-trick and was determined to give Mbeumo as many chances. Not as influential after the break but the job was already done.
Frank Onyeka - 6/10 - Brought on to make up the numbers and did a decent enough job.
Mads Roerslev - 5/10 - Had a rough time dealing with Traore.
Mathias Jorgensen - N/A
