Winners & Losers From Gameweek 18 in the Championship

'What is 2020 going to bring us next' - words we've all uttered more than a few times in the past 12 months or so.

Well, we'll tell you what it brought us next: a Neil Warnock side scored THREE goals. THREE OF THEM. THREE WHOLE GOALS. This year has thrown some weird stuff at us be we genuinely weren't ready for this.

Elsewhere, there were wins for a number of promotion chasing sides, while some of those clubs towards the bottom end of the league are in danger of being cut adrift following yet another defeat.

Let's take a look at the biggest winners and losers from this Championship gameweek.

1. Winners - Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough's clash with Millwall saw them score more than two in a game for just the second time since Warnock took charge of the club in June - with the veteran overseeing 25 league games in that time - and the thumping 3-0 victory was exactly what was needed following a disastrous few weeks.

Boro had suffered four defeats in their previous six games, a run which has seen them slip down the table, though Saturday's win could be just what Warnock's men needed to stop the rot and spark their promotion push back into life.

2. Losers - Sheffield Wednesday

Dear me Sheffield Wednesday.

They seem to be perennial losers in our Championship roundups, but it's impossible not to include them when they sit bottom of the table without a win in eight games.

Their home clash with Barnsley represented a great opportunity for Tony Pulis' side to lift themselves off the foot of the Championship, but instead they slumped to a 2-1 defeat, with life in the third tier for the first time since 2012 beginning to look an increasing possibility.

3. Winners - Rotherham

Having taken just one point from their previous six games, Rotherham were beginning to slip closer and closer to the bottom three.

Goals haven't been particularly hard to come by for the Millers, but keeping them out is proving problematic, so Paul Warne will be delighted to have watched his side keep a clean sheet as they overcame promotion-chasing Bristol City in a comfortable 2-0 win.

4. Losers - Preston

Being a Preston fan must be like torture at times.

A few weeks ago they went away to Bournemouth and beat one of the best sides in the league, but then failed to beat a struggling Wycombe side at home the following game. This week's rollercoaster ride took the shape of a 3-0 battering from promotion contenders Middlesbrough on Wednesday, before being beaten by the same scoreline at Luton on Saturday.

Consistency is key in a league as demanding and unforgiving as the Championship, and Preston just can't seem to find any.

5. Winners - Swansea

Well, if beating your rivals to put yourself firmly back in the automatic promotion race doesn't constitute as a win, then what does?

Despite sitting third in the table, Swansea have only recorded back-to-back victories twice this season, with inconsistency meaning they're in the promotion mix rather than surging ahead in the table.

The Swans' downfall last campaign was perhaps their over-reliance on Andre Ayew and Rhian Brewster, so a double for Jamal Lowe will have delighted Steve Cooper in their 2-0 win over Cardiff.

6. Losers - Wycombe Wanderers

It's beginning to look ominous for Gareth Ainsworth's men.

Granted, they're hardly cut adrift in the Championship drop zone and there's still plenty of time for them to drag themselves to safety, but their home clash against fellow strugglers Coventry represented a great opportunity to make up ground on those above them - but they blew it.

Despite a second-half revival, the home side slumped to a 2-1 defeat and stretched their winless run to eight games.

Wycombe can't seem to score and they're leaking goals for fun - not the best combination if you want to spend another season in the second flight.
