Manchester United are said to be ‘very serious’ about signing Lens centre-back Facundo Medina as a result of the 21-year-old impressing in Ligue 1 in the first half of the season.

Initially schooled at River Plate, Medina only joined Lens last summer from Argentine club Talleres and was immediately playing regular in France’s top flight for his newly promoted club.

Local newspaper La Voix du Nord notes that Lens paid around €3.6m with add-ons of up to €2.4m for Medina. But it is said that United could move ‘rapidly’ and offer them €12m (£10.7m).

That would present a handsome profit to Lens and it is expected they would still keep Medina on loan for the remainder of the season, with Medina unlikely to relocate to Manchester in January.

United are in the market for a centre-back in 2021 and have scouted a number of players already as they assess the options available to them.

Despite also keeping tabs on the contract situation surrounding Sergio Ramos at Real Madrid, plenty of their potential targets are young or still with long-term potential to develop at Old Trafford. That has included Pau Torres as a primary target, as well as Jules Kounde, Caglar Soyuncu and Ben White.

Intriguingly, Medina is left-footed, which is what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has ideally wanted to provide better balance to his team on the pitch.

United are hoping to move on Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones from a bloated centre-back department as soon as possible. Eric Bailly has recently returned to form and fitness, while Solskjaer still also has home-grown talent Axel Tuanzebe at his disposal.

Facundo Medina FIFA Rating

Medina is available on FIFA 21. His is a rare silver card on FIFA Ultimate Team and his overall rating this season is 70. He has 78 for pace, which makes him relatively speedy for a centre-back – something United have been wanting at the back alongside the less mobile Harry Maguire. For comparison's sake, that also makes him quicker on the game than Bailly.

His passing is 59, dribbling is 68, defending is 70 and physical is 73, as well as shooting at 33.

It is estimated his current potential in Career Mode could be 82.
