The club action may have only just returned for much of Europe but there is an international break on the way already and England face a couple of tricky opponents.

The Three Lions take on Ukraine in the next step of their 2024 European Championship qualification campaign before a friendly with Scotland where manager Gareth Southgate may elect to try out some more inexperienced players at international level.

With two matches on the horizon, here is all you need to know about England's schedule in the next international break.

When do England face Ukraine and Scotland?

The first of England's two matches during the international break is the one that matters the most, at least in a competitive sense. The Three Lions are up against Ukraine in a Euro 2024 qualifier, their fifth of ten games.

Things have certainly been going well. England won their first four qualifiers in a group that contains Ukraine, Italy, North Macedonia and Malta. Another victory against Ukraine would put England well on their way towards another major tournament and a crack at going one step further than they did in 2021.

That game will be played at the Stadion Miejski Wroclaw in Poland on account of the ongoing war. It will kick off at 17:00 BST on Saturday 9 September.

After that match has been completed, England's attention will turn to a grudge match against Scotland at Hampden Park. Expect Southgate to give more minutes to players who are fighting to break properly into the England team.

That game is set to take place on a Tuesday evening, September 12, at 19:45 BST.

Who is in the England squad to face Ukraine and Scotland?

Southgate named his England squad for the Ukraine and Scotland matches on Thursday afternoon and there are some new faces for fans to see in an England shirt, as well as some inclusions that might make fans roll their eyes.

One of the major headlines is Harry Maguire is a part of the squad despite not playing so far for Manchester United this season and featuring very little at the back end of last season.

There is a potential international debut for Chelsea youngster Levi Colwill which will please many fans, while Eddie Nketiah's great start to the season with Arsenal has been rewarded with a call-up.

It is a 26-man squad but Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling, a regular for England in recent years, has not made it in after a tough first season at Chelsea in which he could not produce anywhere close to his best form.

The full squad can be seen below:

Goalkeepers: Sam Johnstone (Crystal Palace), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal)

Defenders: Ben Chilwell (Chelsea), Levi Colwill (Chelsea), Lewis Dunk (Brighton), Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Harry Maguire (Manchester United), Fikayo Tomori (Milan), Kieran Trippier (Newcastle), Kyle Walker (Manchester City)

Midfielders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Conor Gallagher (Chelsea), Jordan Henderson (Al-Ettifaq), Kalvin Phillips (Manchester City), Declan Rice (Arsenal)

Forwards: Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Jack Grealish (Manchester City), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), James Maddison (Tottenham), Eddie Nketiah (Arsenal), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Callum Wilson (Newcastle)
