In a Milan derby that seemingly had everything, including the referee having to be replaced due to a hamstring injury, the aggressive confrontation between Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku was the enduring image that has been plastered all over social media.

With AC Milan and Inter both now firing on all cylinders after a barren few years for the city’s iconic football clubs, the former Manchester United colleagues butted heads on the stroke of half-time and had to be pulled apart by teammates.

A yellow card was shown to each, but the referee soon also signalled for half-time at San Siro and the hostility continued as both players headed towards the tunnel and Lukaku was held back.

Twitter account Italian Football TV recorded what was said after watching the furious clash over and over, alleging it kicked off when Ibrahimovic called Lukaku a ‘donkey’.

The initial spat then carried on after they had been separated.

The Inter striker responded by saying" “Let’s go inside you bitch, we’re gonna see.”

Ibrahimovic, who was later sent off when the game resumed for a second yellow card, is said to have insulted Lukaku's mother.

Lukaku supposedly then told the Swede: “F*ck you & your wife you little b***h.”

As Lukaku reached the tunnel, he is also alleged to have said: “You want to speak about my mother you son of a b***h? I’ll shoot you in your head.”

Ibrahimovic had opened the scoring for Milan in the Coppa Italia quarter-final tie. Lukaku himself got Inter’s equaliser from the penalty spot just over 10 minutes after Ibrahimovic had been given his marching orders. The winner then came from a Christian Eriksen free-kick deep into stoppage time.

Inter will go on to face the winner of the tie between Juventus and SPAL in the semi-finals.
