The 2022/23 season will not go down as one of the most spectacular campaigns in Liverpool's history.

The Reds were expected to be major players in the Premier League title race after going close last year in both England's top flight and the Champions League, but instead performances have been poor and consistency illusive.

With a number of exciting teams around them, there is the danger that Jurgen Klopp's side could end the season with one of their worst placings ever in Premier League history.

Liverpool have never finished a Premier League season in the bottom half. They have been particularly close on three separate occasions, accruing 60 points twice and 52 on another occasion, and in both 2011/12 and 2015/16 they finished eighth in 38-game seasons.

That 2011/12 campaign saw them pick up only 52 points, their lowest ever haul in the Premier League.

Their start to Premier League proceedings was not ideal as they finished the 1993/94 in eighth place with 60 points. Then-manager Graeme Souness was blessed with superb talent in the squad, with John Barnes and Steve McManaman supporting Ian Rush up top.

While their arch-rivals Manchester United were completing a domestic treble, Liverpool could only sit and watch as they produced their worst showing for five years under Roy Evans and Gerard Houllier's close watch.

The 2015/16 season is a recent low-point and placing-wise but did see Klopp replace Brendan Rodgers and is treated as the first phase of a rebuild that saw the Anfield side eventually win the Premier League and Champions League.

The Reds need to surpass the 60-point mark they hit in that campaign to ensure it remains their worst finish in recent times.

Could Liverpool endure their lowest finish in 2022/23?

Currently residing in eighth place in the Premier League table, Liverpool have nine remaining outings to turn their poor season on its head.

They recently endured their toughest run of fixtures to date and came out the other side fairly unscathed but in hardly great form with two points from games against Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal.

They now have nine games to beat that tally of 52 points from the 2011/12 season which shouldn't be too problematic, but with the likes of Tottenham, Aston Villa and Brighton ahead of them, it's looking tough for Liverpool to avoid a finish better than eighth place in 2022/23. Brentford and Fulham are close behind, too.
