In the final game on the first weekend of the new Premier League season, West Ham United host reigning champions Manchester City this Sunday afternoon.

David Moyes' side sat fourth as late as December but never recovered from a gulley of form leading up to Christmas. The Hammers ultimately lost their Europa League semi-final and failed to qualify for the tournament again with a seventh-placed league finish only confirmed by their final day defeat.

Manchester City managed to stabilise a mini-wobble themselves, dropping points in just one of their final seven matches - though that was at West Ham's London Stadium.

Here's everything you need to know about the meeting between these two.

West Ham team news

Moyes may have to line up without his two £30m-plus arrivals. Centre-back Nayef Aguerd was forced into surgery on his ankle during preseason and the towering striker Gianluca Scamacca isn't quite up to full match fitness following his arrival from Serie A.

Scamacca's Italian compatriot Angelo Ogbonna has been playing with the club's under-21s, easing his way back to full fitness following a season-ending injury in November.

Aymeric Laporte isn't expected to return from knee surgery until September at the earliest. Only two players made more Premier League starts for City than the Spain international last season and they got off to a losing start in the Community Shield in his absence.

West Ham vs Manchester City score prediction

Moyes may not have beaten Pep Guardiola's side in last season's top flight, but West Ham are a bad matchup for City, boasting strengths in their traditional blind spots; counter-attacks and set pieces.

Yet, while City haven't traditionally been fast starters under Guardiola - dropping points in the opening month of the last five seasons - they come into the vast majority of matches as favourites, even against tricky opposition in the form of West Ham.

Prediction: West Ham 1-2 Manchester City
