West Ham have once again been linked with Fiorentina centre-back Nikola Milenkovic, a player who was already of interest to the Hammers last summer.
Milenkovic has entered the final season of his contract with Fiorentina and could be sold before the end of the transfer window to ensure he doesn’t leave as a free agent next year.
Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Milenkovic is the subject of interest from West Ham, a year after the Premier League side had a €25m (£22m) offer rejected by Fiorentina.
The circumstances are now different and more in favour of the Hammers, although they aren’t the only team showing interest in the 23-year-old Serbia international as it is said that Sevilla have asked for information on Milenkovic too.
Milenkovic has been with Fiorentina since 2017 and has been a regular in Serie A since 2018, but he has never played in European competition and a move to either West Ham or Sevilla would be a step up in that respect.
The Hammers have qualified for the Europa League group stage as a result of last season’s sixth-place Premier League finish, while Sevilla are in the Champions League.
As things stand, West Ham go into the new season with Angelo Ogbonna, Issa Diop and Craig Dawson as their senior centre-back options. Meanwhile, 21-year-old Frederik Alves is yet to play a first-team game since his arrival in January 2021.
Winston Reid has been playing at the Olympics with New Zealand this summer after spending last season on loan with Brentford and Sporting Kansas City. Those loan spells have proven vital for building up his fitness as he hasn’t played for West Ham since 2018 because of a knee injury, however it is unlikely that he will feature in David Moyes' plans next term.
Fabian Balbuena was released at the end of last season and has since joined Dynamo Moscow.
