Former Arsenal and Manchester City left-back Gael Clichy has thanked an eagle-eyed fan for a scouting tip after scoring a halfway line worldie for Swiss side Servette.

Clichy's recent performance in the Rhone derby against FC Sion caught the attention of fans and pundits alike. After a powerful tackle that demonstrated his physicality and skill, he found himself with enough space to contemplate a daring move.

Clichy then decided to go for a shot from the halfway line, launching an arcing strike that sailed into the net.

Servette manager Alain Geiger described Clichy's goal as "a superb lob of anthology," showcasing his poetic appreciation for the moment.

Clichy later revealed the inspiration for the goal - just his ninth in senior football - came after a DM from a fan on Instagram who pointed out that Sion goalkeeper Alexandros Safarikas loves wandering away from his goal.

“This morning, I received a message from a Servette fan on Instagram,” he said. “He told me that the opposing goalkeeper was often very advanced.

“I anticipated, I looked and I actually saw him away from his line. It’s all about intention, information gathering and execution.”

When asked where this moment of glory was the best goal of his career, Clichy laughed and said: “I don’t score many, so it easily enters the top five."
