A Kasper Dolberg brace and late goals from Joakim Maehle and Martin Braithwaite gave Denmark a comfortable 4-0 win against Wales on Saturday evening, as Kasper Hjulmand's men make it through to the last eight of Euro 2020.

Despite a promising start from Wales, Denmark were able to find their feet and dominate proceedings thereafter. They eventually opened the scoring just before the half hour mark, when Dolberg took Mikkel Damsgaard's lay off in his stride before unleashing a venomous curling strike into the bottom corner.

Matters were made worse just four minutes into the second half when Neco Williams' clearance went horribly wrong, gifting the ball to Dolberg who, from six yards out, reacted well to lash home.

Denmark were happy enough to sit back and absorb pressure, before pushing forward on the break to make it three on 89 minutes. Substitute Mathias Jensen picked out Maehle beautifully, before the Atalanta man had the time to cut onto his left and thrash the ball into the top corner.

There was enough time for more drama as Welsh substitute Harry Wilson saw a straight red for a cynical challenge on Maehle. The decision further opened things up in the latter stages and Hjulmand's men were able to add a fourth. Andreas Cornelius cushioned the ball into Braithwaite's path, before the Barcelona forward buried the ball into the bottom corner.

The dominant win puts Denmark through to the quarter-finals at the expense of a dejected-looking Wales side, who'll be disappointed to have not recreated the heroics of 2016.

Now, let's get into some ratings.

WALES PLAYER RATINGS

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Ben Davies

Danny Ward (GK) - 5/10 - Looked solid on a few occasions but just couldn't do anything about any of the goals - given no chance.

Connor Roberts (RB) - 6/10 - Showed decent energy on the right and cut out a few crosses before they made their way into the box, before being forced off with injury in the first half.

Chris Mepham (CB) - 6/10 -
Covered his colleagues quite well, shown in his tracking of runners in behind and marking in the area, seeing out the threat and making ten interventions.

Joe Rodon (CB) - 5/10 -
Was alive to a lot of the danger in the box, registering eight clearances but seemed a little off the pace otherwise and couldn't really get the better of his opposition when forced to mark tightly.

Ben Davies (LB) - 5/10 - Was decent in one on one situations, making four tackles but left huge gaps at the back later on in the game.

2. Midfielders

Aaron Ramsey, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Joe Morrell (CM) - 6/10 - Often provided an option for his colleagues and spread play from midfield very efficiently. Put in a good defensive shift for the most part, managing six interventions.

Joe Allen (CM) - 5/10 - Tenacious throughout, although that tenacity became sloppiness and recklessness all too often. Always looked to be chasing the game but never quite got to grips with it.

Aaron Ramsey (AM) - 6/10 - Started off well, finding space to impact things but his threat was soon dealt with by Denmark as Andreas Christensen stepped up to man-mark him.

3. Forwards

Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale (RW) - 6/10 - A real danger in the opening stages, seeming to terrify the opposition back line with every touch. Apart from a couple of wonderful balls however, he faded out as Denmark got a foothold.

Kieffer Moore (ST) - 4/10 - Showed his strengths sporadically, but was marshalled well by his opposite numbers and was generally absent.

Daniel James (LW) - 6/10 - Great movement and pace throughout but his electric qualities were made redundant as soon as the Wales midfield were denied the time to pick him out.

4. Substitutes

Joakim Maehle, Neco Williams

Neco Williams (RB) - 2/10 - Oh dear. Gave Denmark their 2-0 lead with a horror clearance - really one to forget.

Harry Wilson (AM) - 2/10 - Another horror cameo. Lazy challenge late on that got him sent off.

Tyler Roberts (ST) - 6/10

David Brooks (LW) - 5/10

DENMARK PLAYER RATINGS

5. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Kasper Schmeichel (GK) - 6/10 - Was worried with a couple of decent efforts in the opening minutes but wasn't troubled after that.

Jens Stryger Larsen (RB) - 6/10 - Got upfield consistently and, although he couldn't influence things from open play, his corners gave Wales real problems as he registered two key passes.

Simon Kjaer (CB) - 7/10 - A commanding performance at the back, constantly in the right place at the right time and ensuring that Wales' front three never really got a sniff after their bright start.

Jannik Vestergaard (CB) - 7/10 - Looked much more comfortable when Denmark reshuffled into a back four and started to get tight to Moore.

Joakim Maehle (LB) - 8/10 - Stood firm enough against the quality of Bale, but his best work came as he surged forward. Looked a threat in the final third and played a huge part in the opener with a brilliantly threaded ball through to Damsgaard in the build up, before making it 3-0 with a fantastically-taken strike.

6. Midfielders

Andreas Christensen's introduction into midfield was the changing point in the match

Andreas Christensen (DM) - 8/10 - A massive part of Denmark's dominance with his positioning and defensive nous. As soon as he stepped up to midfield, the game changed. Ramsey was nullified, the outlet of Moore from long balls was no more, and Wales simply failed to play through the midfield. Protected the back four brilliantly, making three interceptions.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (CM) - 7/10 - General-like in midfield, always picking up loose pieces and distributing the ball into teammates with space to keep things ticking along.

Thomas Delaney (CM) - 7/10 - Didn't really showcase his wand of a left foot, often getting closed down quickly. Had a very solid game, though, always introducing an element of calm with his tidiness and composure in possession.

7. Forwards

Martin Braithwaite (RW) - 7/10 - Linked play to decent effect when Denmark looked to break forward, and eventually got himself a goal with a well-taken finish late on.

Kasper Dolberg (ST) - 9/10 - A clear danger from early on and proved it with a sensational strike to make it 1-0 and an alert finish to double his side's lead.

Mikkel Damsgaard (LW) - 8/10 - A very bright spark in the Denmark side. Found pockets of space, had some exquisite touches to get out of tight areas and drive upfield to make three key passes, and got himself an assist for the opener.

8. Substitutes

Mathias Jensen, Aaron Ramsey

Christian Norgaard (CM) - 6/10

Mathias Jensen (CM) - 7/10 - Great vision to assist Maehle for Denmark's third.

Andreas Cornelius (ST) - 7/10 - Great strength and power to see things out. Assisted the fourth nicely.

Joachim Andersen (CB) - 6/10

Nicolai Boilesen (RB) - 6/10
