Tottenham suffered their first defeat of their Europa Conference League journey as they were comprehensively beaten 1-0 by Vitesse on Thursday.
The Dutch side had the better of the scrappy start. They had some decent half-chances and and an unconvincing penalty shout, and perhaps should have taken the lead when Jacob Rasmussen's deft header passed agonisingly wide of the post.
Spurs were very poor in the first 45, playing so slowly and struggling to find a way through a stubborn Vitesse defence.
However, they needed just 90 seconds of the second half to make something happen. Bryan Gil picked the ball up on the edge of the box and unleashed a ferocious strike which ricocheted off the bar and away.
Steven Bergwijn spurned another decent chance to score, after which Spurs regressed back into their shell and allowed Vitesse to regain the composure which saw them dictate proceedings before the break.
It took them 78 minutes, but the Dutch side finally took the lead they deserved, and it was danger man Maximilian Wittek who steered home a glorious volley from the edge of the box to seal the victory for Vitesse.
Tottenham player ratings
1. Goalkeeper & defenders
Pierluigi Gollini (GK) - 5/10 - Made some routine saves but once again looked a little shaky with the ball at his feet. Needs to learn when to just put his foot through it.
Japhet Tanganga (RB) - 5/10 - Abundantly clear that he is not actually a right-back. Looked uncomfortable up against Wittek and Openda.
Davinson Sanchez (CB) - 7/10 - Bailed Tanganga out of jail a good few times and looked to be enjoying himself against Vitesse's constant pressure.
Joe Rodon (CB) - 5/10 - Uncomfortable on the ball and looked pretty unhappy to be there in general. Cameras caught him complaining as much as they saw him do anything good.
Ben Davies (LB) - 5/10 - Guilty of playing far too slow and safe when going forwards. Didn't do anything wrong really, but didn't do much right either.
Harry Winks (DM) - 2/10 - Didn't defend, didn't playmake and didn't dictate the tempo. Lost his head towards the end as well.
Giovani Lo Celso (DM) - 5/10 - Very underwhelming in the first half but was clearly on the receiving end of the hairdryer treatment at the break as he actually looked interested after that.
Bryan Gil (RM) - 6/10 - Didn't have a lot of quality in the final third but was Spurs' most dangerous forward by a long way. Looked very dangerous on the ball and won plenty of fouls with his quick movement.
Dele Alli (AM) - 3/10 - A really off night for Dele. Swarmed whenever he got the ball and just could not link up midfield and attack.
Steven Bergwijn (LM) - 5/10 - Played with drive and intensity but his lack of product in the final third was a problem. Wasted a great chance early in the second half.
Dane Scarlett (ST) - 3/10 - Let down by his team-mates as the youngster just couldn't get into the game at all. Hold-up play was poor (because he's not a target man) but everything else wasn't really his fault.
Dilan Markanday (RW) - 6/10 - Replaced Scarlett late on and had one or two good moments on the ball.
