Video: Montreal striker Romell Quioto misses an open goal from 3 yards

There are those moments in football history where a player is left so embarrassed by something they did that they can't bear to look their teammates in the eye.

We've had Chris Iwelumo against Norway, we've had Rob Green against the USA, we've had that Mainz keeper who mistook the penalty spot for the ball.

And now we've got Montreal's Romell Quioto with...this.

The Honduran striker has been a steady source of goals for Montreal since arriving from Houston in 2019. He hit double figures in his first campaign and was back among the goals in matchday one of 2021, but he now finds himself in the midst of a drought, having failed to net in any of their last MLS six games.

And with finishing like this, we're starting to see why...

His eyes must have lit up when the ball came across from the right and found him free in the six-yard box, dead in the centre of goal, with neither the last defender or the goalkeeper in a position to put him off.

All he had to do was let the ball hit him and it would have found its way over the line.

But from an angle from which it seemed impossible to skew it wide of the far post, he was left in a state of shock, after he skewed it wide of the far post.

To be fair to Quioto, he made up for it soon after. Ten minutes into the second half, he was in amongst it with a wonderful assist for Dorde Mihailovic that appeared to put them on track for a third win of the MLS season.

But he was left rueing his indiscretion when Cincinatti came back into it in style. Huddersfield Town alumnus Jurgen Locadia netted the equaliser before Gustavo Vallecilla netted a dramatic late winner to earn the Eastern Conference basement side their first victory of the season.

Moral of the story, kids? If you want to avoid sheepish apologies to your teammates, then keep your eye on the ball at all times.
