On Wednesday, the San Diego Wave announced that USWNT defender Naomi Girma renewed her contract with the club through the 2026 NWSL season.

"Naomi has been an integral piece of the Wave's success on and off the field since she joined the club," said Molly Downtain, San Diego general manager.

"She has proven that she is one of the top players in this league, and we are thrilled to have her continue to lead our club. Securing her long-term future was a priority for the club, and we are pleased that we were able to reach this agreement as we know Naomi will play a crucial role in the Wave for years to come."

In 2022, San Diego selected Girma in the NWSL Draft for their inaugural season. She gained recognition by winning the Rookie and Defender of the Year awards, becoming the first player in league history to achieve two individual season awards in their rookie year. Known for her ball-playing ability and clearances, Girma is a rock at the back for both the USWNT and Wave.

"The start to my professional journey has been so rewarding here in San Diego," Girma said. "Since being drafted, everyone at the Wave has made San Diego feel like home. My goal has always been to win championships for this city and raise the trophies with my team. I can't wait to play in front of the Sirens [supporters group] and fans for years to come."

Girma has played every game this season for Wave, who currently leads in the NWSL standings. This weekend, they will face off against their rivals, Angel City FC, hoping to maintain their winning streak.

Due to her excellent club form, Girma is a shoo-in to make the USWNT roster for the upcoming World Cup being held in Australia/ New Zealand. Since making her senior debut in April of last year, Girma has accumulated 15 caps with the USWNT.

The Women’s World Cup kicks off on July 20th, with the US facing off against Vietnam on July 21st.
