The United States men’s national team faces Qatar on Thursday at the Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas for a spot in the 2021 Gold Cup final.

The American side will look to make its 12th appearance in the tournament’s final after reaching that stage most recently in 2019.

Qatar, one of two invited nations, could make history should they overcome the USMNT. The underdogs for the match, the Middle Eastern nation were recently ranked the 53rd best team in the world by FIFA and currently holds a 12 match undefeated streak.

The United States has yet to wow thus far, narrowly emerging out of each stage. Gregg Berhalter’s team, however, has proven to do their best work under pressure.

The United States has yet to perform at their fullest potential thus far this season, despite great efforts from MLS players Sebastian Lletget and Gianluca Busio.

Head coach Berhalter expects more from his team, hoping to give that extra push on Thursday to reach the final. Though the American side are favorites to win, the true key to their success will be in the midfield.

The team reports no new injuries since their quarter final match.

The invited nation boasts an impressive offensive ability, emerging from the first stage of the tournament as leaders of Group D after three consecutive victories. The team reports no new injuries and should have a fully fit squad to face the United States.

Qatar have five players who have scored throughout the 2021 Gold Cup, with four goals from the tournament’s leading scorer Ali. If the team can hone in on their offensive abilities and keep their opponent off the ball, Qatar should be able to make history.

This will be the first time the United States and Qatar face each other. Qatar will stand as the USMNT’s 98th different international opponent of all time, and the tenth country they play against from the Asian Football Confederation.

The United States is very likely to score as they prepare an offensive strategy to face Qatar, but this will not be a match of many goals. Qatar holds a defensive edge, challenging the United States as they infiltrate on the attack.
