The eager purring of Manchester United fans can be heard reverberating across the country right now. Spending so long to hunt down Bruno Fernandes, and then waiting what felt like and age to see him line up alongside Paul Pogba, they got their wish on Wednesday night.

A taste of what was to come was given at Tottenham in the previous clash, but they started together for the first time today, and everyone lost their metaphorical s--t.

This, however, is not the only talking point of the game. Indeed, there is a Sheffield United side chasing European football this season, and victory at Old Trafford would seem them leapfrog their rivals in the Premier League table.

So, mixed emotions ahead of kick off.

That said, the whole Pogba/Fernandes thing was pretty prominent.

Like, dominating Twitter levels of prominent.

None of their names were on peoples' lips seven minutes in however. No, it was another Frenchman, that man Anthony Martial, linking up with Marcus Rashford to slam home the opening goal.

The assist was hit harder than the shot.

It did seem for all of the world as if United were about the grab their second not long after, but somehow the pair of Martial and Rashford combined to miss a golden chance.

Martial's run at goal looked certain to end with the scores being doubled, but when he opted to square for his English strike partner, Rashford couldn't get his feet sorted and his effort trickled wide.

Let off for the Blades.

As Sheffield United were building a head of steam towards the end of the first half, United's frightening frontline got in on the act again.

This time, both Fernandes and Pogba were involved in the build up, with the former dancing his way across the box before feeding the Frenchman, who in turn found Aaron Wan-Bissaka to set up Martial.

Are you scared Premier League? You should be.

It became an uphill task from thereon in for the Blades.

Could they produce an almighty comeback in the second half?

Well, no, not really. An early Oliver McBurnie half-chance was missed (entirely) but the Blades simply couldn't get near their opponents who controlled proceedings.

One of the few moments of note came from Martial, but not quite as everyone had hoped.

An almighty run from Pogba - including nutmegs and step-overs galore - put him in place to shoot in the box, but his fellow international pinched possession off him and blazed waaaaay over.

Naughty, naughty.

It did come, though, and in rather superb fashion too. Martial's best Premier League scoring season got even better.

This time, it was a delicate chip over the onrushing Simon Moore to cap off a fine individual showing and his first Red Devils hat-trick.

There were to be no further goals, but in all honesty, did there need to be?

United looked at their very best on Wednesday in the searing Manchester heat, with countless positives to take from a fantastic day at the office.

Martial coming of age, Bruno/Pogba link up, Champions League football on the horizon....

After the season they've had, does it get any better?
