It was bound to happen, but it's still a shock.

Cristiano Ronaldo is leaving Manchester United after the club mutually agreed with the 37-year-old to sever his contract with immediate effect.

A statement from the club announcing the news read: "Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect.

"The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future.

"Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch."

Following the very controversial interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV and his walk out during the Tottenham Hotspur game at Old Trafford, it's fair to say that most Manchester United fans on Twitter were actually pretty happy to see the back Ronaldo and the circus he had created.

Despite his rather childish actions in recent months at the club however, some Man Utd fans were quick to thank CR7 for his contributions over the years.

While Ronaldo's second spell at the club was, to put it lightly, an unmitigated disaster, his first was pretty damn good. Between 2003 and 2009, the forward bagged 118, three Premier League titles and one UEFA Champions League.

Fans of other clubs were keen to beg for Ronaldo to sign for their club - in spite of all that baggage...
