Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

Another day, another questionable Manchester United performance. This time there would be no moment of magic from Edinson Cavani and no late Cristiano Ronaldo winner, with the Red Devils slipping to a 1-0 home defeat against Wolves.

A combination of injuries and coronavirus led to a minor miracle when Man Utd's starting XI was revealed. Namely, Phil Jones starting a Premier League match.

Social media was excited and scared in equal measure ahead of his first action in 708 days.

Another notable decision from Ralf Rangnick was opting to give Ronaldo the captain's armband, in the absence of regular skipper Harry Maguire.

It's a good thing that there was some entertainment before kick off, because once things got underway drama was at a premium.

Ruben Neves went close with a dipping volley, with David de Gea forced into more than one good save to keep the hosts in it.

Meanwhile, United were pretty rancid going forward. Fans were not best pleased, particularly when Ronaldo nearly gifted Wolves a goal with a wayward defensive header.

It was business as usual in the opening exchanges of the second half before the arrival of Bruno Fernandes from the substitutes bench finally woke United up.

First Bruno cannoned an effort into the bar, and then Ronaldo had a great header ruled out for offside.

Wolves had their chances too, though.

Romain Saiss hitting the bar with 15 minutes to play was a real hearts-in-mouths moment for the Old Trafford faithful.

United did not heed this warning shot and Wolves managed to poke their noses in front eight minutes from time.

Joao Moutinho was the scorer, with the midfielder squeezing a scrappy effort into the bottom corner to ruin De Gea's clean sheet.

With seconds left to go United were given one last chance to salvage something when they were awarded a free kick just outside the Wolves box.

Bruno and Ronaldo were both stood over the free kick, with the former eventually unleashing a fine effort which drew an even better save from Jose Sa.

And that was all she wrote. Another tough day for Rangnick's side and their fans were not shy to voice their disappointment.
