Twitter explodes as Ed Woodward resigns as Man Utd executive vice-chairman
Football, bloody hell.
With the football world reeling from the announcement of and Chelsea and Man City's subsequent withdrawal from the two-day-old Super League, it was revealed that Manchester United's much-maligned executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward had resigned.
Inevitably supporters put two and two together and figured he had thrown in the towel as a result of the Super League debacle, with the proposal on the verge of collapse following the Blues' and the Cityzens' respective decisions to pull out, and rumours swirling that Man Utd, Tottenham, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid would soon follow suit.
However, conflicting reports suggested it was in fact unrelated, and that Woodward had been due to leave at the end of the calendar year before his departure was moved forward...seems legit.
Confusion reigned...
But what was clear was that Woodward was on his way out, and it's fair to say there wasn't many Manchester United fans too devastated to see the back of him...
Man Utd then officially put some confusion to bed by releasing a statement confirming Woodward would leave his role at the end of 2021, although there was no mention of the Super League and its imminent failure.
It's safe to say supporters were happy to have the news confirmed...
Thus potentially ends a torrid period in Man Utd's history, and with the club second in the Premier League under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer things may finally be looking up for their weary fanbase.
The fallout of the potential disbanding of the Super League continues apace. Who knows whose head will be next to roll?
