Tottenham have officially completed the signing of Atalanta's Argentina international centre back Cristian Romero for a £47m fee.

Spurs have been linked with a whole host of defensive options throughout the window but their interest in Romero has picked up and intensified in recent weeks, with the 23-year-old recently arriving in London to complete his medical.

The north London club have now confirmed the deal, revealing Romero has signed a six-year deal.

Tottenham have needed fresh legs in central defence for some time now, with Toby Alderweireld, Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez all struggling during the last few years. Romero was named Serie A's best defender for the 2020/21 season and won the Copa America with Argentina over the summer.

New director of football Fabio Paratici has wasted little time in shaking up the Tottenham squad this summer. Alongside Romero, the club have also brought in goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini and Spanish youngster Bryan Gil. Club stalwarts Alderweireld and Erik Lamela have departed, while Joe Hart has completed a switch to Celtic.

The main transfer story in north London revolves around Harry Kane.

The striker has not yet returned from his holiday for pre-season training as he pushes for a move to Manchester City, though Tottenham remain insistent he is not for sale. City recently completed the signing of Jack Grealish, but Pep Guardiola revealed on Friday that their interest in the striker could amount to nothing if Spurs are adamant on keeping Kane.

Kane later released a statement denying claims that he refused to return to training at the start of the week, and that he has been hurt by comments questioning his professionalism. He insisted he will return to the club on Saturday as originally scheduled.
