Tottenham Hotspur are now understood to be close to striking a deal to sign Atalanta centre-back Cristian Romero.
The Argentinian is right at the top of Spurs' wish list this summer but talks with Atalanta have been dragging on for a while now over the Italian side's determination to receive all the money up front instead of agreeing to add-ons.
Sunday brought us conflicting reports on his future, with some saying a bid had been accepted and others saying a deal was way off, but now it appears as though this saga is close to coming to a positive conclusion.
That came shortly after another brief update from Italian outlet La Repubblica, who state that the move is 'done' and Romero is now planning his trip to London to finalise the transfer.
Finally, to add to all the fun, talkSPORT claimed earlier on Sunday that Spurs have seen a bid of £43m accepted by Atalanta, and although Fabrizio Romano later stressed that Atalanta had not accepted any offers yet, it's clear that things are moving in the right direction.
Romero's determination to make the move has likely helped move things forward. He is understood to have told the Atalanta board that moving to Spurs is an 'opportunity he cannot miss', urging the Italian side to be a little more flexible in talks.
Where we are actually at in this transfer saga isn't totally clear, but it seems as though we're close to a conclusion. A bid may not have been accepted just yet, but Spurs have now voiced a willingness to pay up for Romero, and that's all they need to do at this point.
Romero is now on track to become Spurs' third summer signing, following fellow Atalanta man Pierluigi Gollini and Spanish starlet Bryan Gil in sealing moves to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium ahead of the new season.
There are also plans to add a few more new faces, with another striker and perhaps even a winger also on Nuno Espirito Santo's wish list.
