Tottenham midfielder Tanguy Ndombele was ‘simply not selected’ for the club’s pre-season friendly against Arsenal on Sunday, despite being fit - raising serious questions about his Spurs future.

Ndombele remains the club's record signing following his arrival from Lyon for an initial £55m in 2019. But having already had a rollercoaster relationship with Jose Mourinho, it appears he has so far not forced his way into new manager Nuno Esprito Santo’s plans.

The 24-year-old, who was not selected by France for Euro 2020 and therefore didn’t have his summer holidays delayed, was recently permitted time off for paternity leave.

It was assumed he was injured or not fit when he was left out of the squad altogether for the Arsenal friendly. But that appears not to have been the case, with The Athletic now reporting that Ndombele had been training in the build up to the game and was ‘available’ for selection.

Not being picked at all, even for the bench, is a blow to the player’s prospects of having a regular role this season and Ndombele is said to be ‘weighing up his options’.

He is expected to assess the situation at the end of August when the summer transfer window is coming to a close, by which time Spurs will have played their opening three Premier League games against Manchester City, Wolves and Watford.

What kind of involvement, or whether he has any at all, Ndombele has in those matches could provide an indicator as to what kind of role he might have under Nuno in the coming months.

It is said that Spurs, given their major investment in the talented but inconsistent Frenchman, would still like to make a success of the transfer. The player’s salary at £200,000 per week could also become an obstacle to a possible exit if he does decide he wants to move on.
