Jose Mourinho expects Son Heung-min to put pen to paper on a new long-term Tottenham contract but insists there is no rush to do so.

Son has grown in stature every season since his move to north London form Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, establishing himself as one of the club's and Premier League's top players.

He netted his ninth goal in just eight appearances this season after scoring against LASK in the Europa League on Thursday evening, and his red hot form this campaign has triggered talk of the South Korean securing a new lucrative deal at Spurs to make him one of the club's top earners.

Mourinho explained he and the club are keen to tie Son down to a new long-term contract, but with three years still left to run on his current deal, the Tottenham manager insisted there was no pressure to do so instantly.

"I would love [him to sign a new contract],” Mourinho said [via the Evening Standard]. “Son has three years of contract, so it’s not like we’re in an extreme situation of everybody being worried. It’s more that Son loves it here, I believe that he would like to commit his future to the club for a long time.

“Everybody at the club is totally in love with this player and this boy and is trying also to make him feel part of the furniture. It’s normal the club tries to go from three years to four or five or six, I don’t know. It’s normal.

“But it’s a very calm situation because Sonny has three more years of contract. But I wish [for him to get a new contract]. He deserves one. The club knows that and sooner or later, without any pressure, they will arrive into a decision.”
