Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig on an initial loan until the end of the season.

Spurs had been scouring Europe for another attacking option for the second half of the 2023/24 campaign and they moved swiftly to secure Werner's signature after opening talks over a deal last week.

Manchester United had also made an enquiry about Werner earlier this winter, but they did not follow up on their interest and he has now joined Tottenham, who have an optional purchase clause reported to be worth £13m to £17m.

Interestingly, Spurs were first linked with a move for Werner in 2015 during his days at Stuttgart, but they instead pursued a move for Son Heung-min, who remains at the club to this day and is now first-team captain.

Werner would eventually leave Stuttgart for Leipzig in 2016, where he spent the next four years cementing his status as one of Europe's best up-and-coming forwards.

The Germany international then made his first move to the Premier League with Chelsea, where he helped them win the Champions League. He tallied 23 goals and 21 assists in 89 games for the Blues between 2020 and 2022.

Though he was popular among players and fans, Werner largely failed to live up to expectations at Stamford Bridge and he returned to Leipzig on a permanent deal ahead of the 2022/23 season. Over the last year-and-a-half, he has scored 18 goals in 54 club games, but has lost his place in the starting lineup to Belgium international Lois Openda.

Werner now heads to Tottenham looking to strengthen his hopes of being named in Germany's squad for this summer's Euro 2024 on home soil. He could make his debut on Sunday when Spurs travel to United.
