After a difficult 2021 Major League Soccer season, head coach Javier Perez is "delighted" at Toronto FC's march to the Canadian Championship final against CF Montreal.

The Reds beat Canadian Premier League side Pacific FC 2-1 on Wednesday night to secure passage to the final, where they'll face MLS rivals CF Montreal. Goals from Jozy Altidore and Jacob Shaffelburg inside the opening half-hour were enough to do the damage, with Alejandro Diaz's late strike a mere consolation.

The Canadian Championship is Toronto's last chance at silverware this season, as well as the final opportunity to secure a place in the 2022 Concacaf Champions League.

After Wednesday's match, Perez - who replaced Chris Armas as head coach in July - said fighting for titles is what Toronto FC was built for.

"It means everything. I think that's what this club is all about," the Spaniard responded when asked what it means for TFC to reach the final.

"I think it's a club that is used to fighting for titles and in a very challenging season like this one, the fact to have the opportunity to play a final, and have the opportunity to fight for silverware is all you can ask for. We are very happy and we are very delighted with the position in the final and we are looking forward to playing that final against Montréal."

Toronto are the record seven-time winners of the Canadian Championship, but beating Montreal in the final will be no simple task. CF Montreal are the reigning champions, and stand five places and 18 points ahead of their rival on the Eastern Conference table.

Still, Shaffelburg - scorer of the winning goal on Wednesday - has promised that TFC will not be holding back against their fierce rivals.

"We are going to come in full force," he declared. "We are looking forward to that final for sure."
