Toronto FC are close to making another blockbuster transfer after landing Italy’s Lorenzo Insigne.

According to the Athletic’s Sam Stejskal, the Canadian club are close to a deal that would see  Yeferson Soteldo transferred to Tigres UANL in exchange for defender Carlos Salcedo.

The transfer would not see any money exchanged, but merely a transaction of players. Essentially, a swap of  Soteldo for Salcedo.

Should the deal be finalized, Salcedo would occupy a Designated Player spot on Toronto’s roster, alongside Insigne, Jozy Altidore and Alejandro Pozuelo. Toronto FC would have to offload one player before the Italian forward arrives in the summer.

Salcedo is no stranger to Major League Soccer, having kicked off his career with Western Conference side Real Salt Lake in 2013. He later went on to feature for Chivas de Guadalajara before making stops at ACF Fiorentina and Eintracht Frankfurt.

After two seasons with Frankfurt, the center back returned to Liga MX to play for Tigres. He’s made a huge impact on the team since returning, inspiring the side to win the 2019 Clausura and the 2020 CONCACAF Champions League.

On the other end of the deal, Tigres would receive Soteldo, who arrived in Toronto last April for a reported transfer fee of $6M. He made 24 appearances for the Canadian side after starring for Brazilian side Santos from 2019 to 2020.

Soteldo finished his first MLS season with three goals and 10 assists. His current contract with Toronto FC runs through the 2025 season.

Toronto FC, who finished the 2021 season in 13th place of the Eastern Conference table were in desperate need of a revamp following a disappointing campaign. The team began undergoing changes after Bob Bradley arrived to serve as the newest head coach. He replaced Javier Perez, who stood as interim manager following the mid-season departure of Chris Armas.

We could see this trade sooner rather than later as the 2022 season is set to kick off on February 26.
