Thomas Tuchel provides injury update on Andreas Christensen

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel says he hopes Andreas Christensen will be out for a matter of days rather than weeks after the centre-back hobbled off in the 2-1 win at Man City on Saturday.

Christensen overstretched when attempting to cut out a long ball in the build-up to City's opener late in the first half at the Etihad, with Gabriel Jesus latching onto the loose ball and squaring for Raheem Sterling to tap home.

The Dane went down clutching him hamstring and looked in some pain. After some lengthy treatment he was forced off and replaced by Kurt Zouma.

Christensen has been in imperious form in the second half of the campaign, becoming a key figure in Tuchel's back three alongside some variation of Toni Rudiger, Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta.

With Chelsea's resurgence since the German took the reins seeing them reach the finals of both the FA Cup and the Champions League, and victory against the Citizens lifting the Blues up to third in the Premier League, there is a huge amount at stake in the final few weeks of the season, and Christensen would be a key absentee.

Speaking after the victory, Tuchel revealed it had been a risk to play the 25-year-old in the first place, but was hopeful his defender would be back sooner rather than later.

“I hope it’s not too bad,” he told Chelsea TV. “It’s more or less the same [injury] that he suffered some weeks ago around Porto games, I think, where we had to replace him.

“It was a 50/50 decision today [Saturday] whether we wanted to put him on the pitch or not. I hope we did not make a mistake. Because he’s so crucial for us in the last weeks — so, so strong.

“I hope we can escape with some days [of absence] and not weeks. But I’m not sure yet, I have no confirmation yet.”

Chelsea host Arsenal on Wednesday, before the FA Cup final against Leicester City at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, as the big games just keep on coming.
