It is unusual for a National League side to be in the headlines quite as much as Wrexham AFC have been. The fact that many American fans are able to now name at least one team from the fifth tier of English football is incredible.

It all comes down to the new owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny. The film and TV stars have completely revolutionised the club since they took over. The 'Welcome to Wrexham' docuseries has boosted interest in the club both locally and internationally, and it has coincided with superb form on the pitch too.

The team is now set to play in the English Football League following their promotion, and that means a lot more fans will be travelling to north east Wales to watch their team face Wrexham - or perhaps they'll have adopted Wrexham as a team to go and support every now and then.

Here are some things that you could get up to if you want to make a day of your trip to Wrexham.

The Turf Hotel in Wrexham has been a hub near the Racecourse Ground for fans to meet for over 150 years. While there are plenty of pubs around to enjoy a drink and some chat before a game, The Turf is where you'll find the best atmosphere.

It became even more famous outside of Wales when Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney spent a couple of hours there with fans on their first day in the city after buying the club.

Take in the markets before the game

Given Wrexham used to have the historical market town title, a look around the markets on the morning of the match is a must. The butcher's market, as well as the general market, are both open every Saturday from 09:00-16:00, meaning it could be a great place to have a look around and grab some lunch before the game.

It takes less than 20 minutes to walk from the General Market to the Racecourse Ground and you could stop for a drink at The Turf as part of the journey.

If you don't fancy spending the hours before the game in the pub or wandering around the market, perhaps the XPLORE! Science Discovery Centre would be more your speed.

It is located opposite Ty Pawb (Everyone's House), which is a former market that now acts as the cultural heart of the city. There are exhibitions all year round and there is also a food court. It was selected as one of the five finalists for Art Fund Museum of the Year 2022, the world's largest museum prize.
