Thiago Silva hits out at Todd Boehly and Chelsea ownership after Champions League exit

Thiago Silva has slammed Chelsea's ownership for signing too many players during the recent January transfer window.

The centre-back started both of the Blues' 2-0 defeats to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals over the last week, and has been regular in a team that has struggled to find any sort of form since new ownership took over the club.

Chelsea's horrid form, particularly in the Premier League, recently saw Graham Potter lose his job and be replaced by Frank Lampard until the end of the 2022/23 season. Lampard's appointment hasn't done much to rectify the club's issues, however, as they have lost every single game under his charge to date.

Speaking after the most recent defeat to beIN Sport, Silva was keen to point out the mistakes made by the new ownership groups led by Todd Boehly since they took over. Boehly and co. have spent nearly £500m on new players in the last 12 months, leading to the creation of a rather bloated squad at Stamford Bridge.

He said: “I think the first step has been made, an incorrect step, but it has been made. We can’t be blaming the managers if we don’t take responsibility. It’s a hard period for the club, with a lot of indecision.

“Change of ownership, new players arriving – we had to increase the size of the changing room because it didn’t fit the size of the squad.

“A positive point is that there are amazing players in the squad but on the other hand there are always players that are going to be unhappy. There is always going to be someone upset because not everyone can play. The manager can only pick 11 from a squad of 30-something - that’s tough.

“Some can’t make the squad, we signed eight in January, we need to stop and put a strategy in place otherwise next season we could make the same mistakes.”

Chelsea will look to finally get back to winning ways when they face off against Brentford next Wednesday.
