There are concerns that midfielder Thiago Alcantara may have played his final game for Liverpool because of a serious hamstring injury, a new report has claimed.

Thiago battled a hip injury towards the end of last season and was officially sidelined in April 2023, only making his return to competitive action with a five-minute appearance off the bench in last weekend's 3-1 defeat to Arsenal.

It was later revealed that Thiago had suffered a muscular injury during his appearance which was due to send him back to the sidelines, but little was known about the nature of his issue.

Now, Liverpool journalist Neil Jones reports that Thiago is believed to have picked up a serious hamstring issue, raising the possibility that he may not return again before the end of the current season.

Should that be the case, Thiago may have played his final match for Liverpool as he approaches the end of his contract.

Liverpool's final game of the campaign is currently scheduled for May 19, a visit from Wolverhampton Wanderers, which would give Thiago just over three months to get himself back to full fitness.

The injury will complicate matters for Liverpool as they prepare to make a final decision on the future of Thiago, who is expected to receive interest from Steven Gerrard's Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia if he does leave Liverpool.

Thiago joined Liverpool for £20m in the summer of 2020 but the midfielder, who turns 33 in April, has seen injuries limit his time on the Anfield turf. A knee injury and a spell with Covid-19 shortly kept him sidelined for over three months and he missed a further 80 games between September 2021 and his return from his hip problem earlier this month.

In total, Thiago has managed just 98 appearances for Liverpool but has missed a whopping 102 matches to date.
