Arsenal forward Vivianne Miedema has won the PFA Vertu Motors WSL Fans' Player of the Month award for March.
Miedema saw off stiff competition from Chelsea pair Sam Kerr and Guro Reiten, Manchester United’s Alessia Russo and Ona Batlle, as well as February winner Alex Greenwood from Manchester City who was nominated again.
Arsenal’s Dutch superstar took 56% of the final vote in a landslide win.
The Gunners won all three WSL games they played in March to keep themselves firmly in the title race with reigning champions Chelsea.
Miedema thrived in a new kind of role across those victories. She grew up playing as a ‘number 10’, sometimes even preferring to be involved in creative build up play and only really making the switch to the ‘number nine’ position at the forefront of the attack since moving to England.
But in the WSL across March she dusted off those ‘number 10’ boots and made a huge impact, not least because it helped forge a strong on-field understanding with Stina Blackstenius.
Miedema lined up in midfield, operating behind Blackstenius, for Arsenal’s wins against Reading, Birmingham and Brighton. The team scored 11 goals across the those three fixtures and she had a direct hand in four of them.
The 25-year-old scored the first herself and assisted the fourth for Blackstenius as the Gunners crushed Reading to begin March. She also scored herself again when Arsenal faced Birmingham, with Blackstenius returning the favour, before laying on Beth Mead’s goal in a comfortable win against Brighton to wrap up the club’s WSL commitments for the month.
