Sheffield Wednesday striker Saido Berahino has been voted the PFA Vertu Motors League One Fans' Player of the Month for March.

The 28-year-old has struggled to earn regular minutes this season, starting just nine games to date, but found form during the month of March to help the Owls maintain their push for a play-off place.

Berahino pulled in 31% of the votes cast by the public, comfortably seeing off competition from Shrewsbury's Daniel Udoh and Cheltenham's Alfie May - who between them scored a combined nine goals in 12 League One appearances.

The former West Brom striker kicked off March with a half-hour cameo in the romping 5-2 win over Burton Albion before netting just his third goal of the season in the defeat at Lincoln.

The 16-cap Burundi international then found top gear as Sheffield Wednesday blew Cambridge United away at Hillsborough, grabbing a hat-trick in a convincing 6-0 win to take his season's goal tally to six.

Berahino was unable to follow up that performance with goal contributions against Accrington and Gillingham, but his earlier displays were enough to convince fans to vote him as the standout player in League One.

March's six-player shortlist also featured Portsmouth's George Hirst, a scorer of five goals in six games, Wigan's Will Keane, who bagged four goals in five games, and Plymouth's Ryan Hardie, whose four goals in seven appearances helped the Pilgrims cement their place in the League One play-off places.
