Heading into one of the most hotly anticipated Champions League finals of recent memory, the build up is always dominated with statistics galore.

Whether it's goals scored, previous encounters or historical omens, we get bombarded with figures that add layers of excitement on an already enticing affair.

One of Europe's most successful clubs, Bayern Munich, take on one of Europe's most rookie clubs, Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday's showpiece, but how do the players taking part stack up against the stalwarts of the competition?

For many involved, it will be their first taste of a this particular final, leaving them with plenty of work to do to match the accomplishments of the legends listed below.

Here are the players with the most Champions League final appearances.

Dutchman Edgar Davids tasted success in the Champions League with Ajax on his first ever appearance in the final in 1994/95, however his next three outings all ended in defeat with Ajax and Juventus respectively.

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs enjoyed mixed success in the competition, winning the title in finals against Bayern Munich and Chelsea, but coming up short on both occasions the Red Devils faced Barcelona.

Heading over to Catalonia, Xavi secured four Champions League crowns at Barcelona, playing an integral part of one of the greatest sides the competition has ever seen.

His four successes include victory over Arsenal, Manchester United twice and one against Juventus - which was his 767th and final outing for the club.

Andres Iniesta and Xavi came as a package. An inseparable midfield duo who sat atop a perch all of their own for years on end.

If you reach five finals then surely, surely you have to win one, right? Fortunately for Patrice Evra he did, doing so on his second attempt after losing the 2004 final with Monaco.

After lifting the trophy with Ajax in 1995, Edwin van der Sar had to wait another 13 years before he could be victorious again, doing so in the pouring Moscow rain with a penalty shootout save that ensured United triumphed over Chelsea.

His losses came with Ajax in 1996, and with the Red Devils in 2009 and 2011.


4. Clarence Seedorf

The only player in history to win the Champions League with three different teams, Clarence Seedorf's successes with Ajax, Madrid and Milan are worthy of their own list.

He won it twice with I Rossoneri, but his only loss in such a final also came with the Italian side, in that infamous penalty shootout defeat to Liverpool in 2005.

In the space of just eight years, Toni Kroos has reached a whopping five finals, twice with Bayern and three times with Madrid.

Defeat on home soil with Die Roten in 2012 was followed up with victory the following year against Borussia Dortmund, before he became part of the historic Madrid side later that decade.

If we were including European Cups than Paolo Maldini would top the lot with eight appearances overall, but even discounting his two finals in the previous classification, no player has appeared in more Champions League showpieces than the Italian defender.

All of his outings came with Milan, triumphing in 1994, 2003 and 2007, but losing out in 1993, 1995 and 2005.

Cristiano Ronaldo's first victory with United in 2008 was followed by defeat to Barcelona the following season, but since then he's been imperious with Madrid, winning the title in four out of the five seasons from 2013/14-2017/2018.
