Real Madrid could be without Uruguayan midfielder Federico Valverde for as many as 12 games after he punched Villarreal's Alex Baena after Los Blancos' 3-2 defeat to the Yellow Submarine on 8 April.

The 24-year-old broke through in the Spanish capital before the pandemic and has blossomed into a key cog within Carlo Ancelotti's framework at the Santiago Bernabeu. Valverde is revered for his versatility and tenacity without possession, with his aggression a notable part of his skill set.

However, Valverde's temperament could see him earn a lengthy suspension.

The Uruguayan international punched Villarreal's Baena after Real's recent La Liga meeting, with the Spanish Under-21 defender alleged to have made a comment to Valverde about the player's unborn baby. Valverde's wife was believed to have been having issues during the pregnancy, and the 24-year-old understandably didn't take too kindly to Baena's words. Although, the Spaniard strongly denies making any comment of the sort.

Baena has since filed police charges against Valverde, but a sporting suspension is not necessarily a guarantee if he is found guilty. However, here are the games the midfielder could miss if he is handed a ban.

The Spanish FA’s competition committee will begin the investigation on Wednesday 19 April, but the case isn't likely to be resolved for at least a month thereafter. Thus, Valverde should be available for the Copa del Rey final against Osasuna on 6 May.

If Valverde is found guilty and is suspended, his ban could begin on 21 May as Real visit the relegation-threatened Valencia.
