The best goals of MLS matchday 37 - ranked
- Mathieu Choiniere scored his fifth goal of 2023
- Two backheeled efforts make the list
- A defender takes home #1 honors
Matchday 37 in Major League Soccer didn't disappoint with plenty of outrageous goals being scored across both conferences as the regular season comes to a close.
This past weekend had it all: backheeled goals, impressive consolation goals and out-of-this-world volleyed strikes that put the league on notice. Some teams around the league went full-force in an attempt to qualify for the playoffs, while others were playing it safe was they had already clinched a spot in the postseason.
With that being said, here are the best goals from this past weekend in MLS...
5. Franck Boli (vs CF Montreal)
To start us off, we have the first of two backheeled efforts.
This is some consolation goal for Franck Boli, and despite the loss, Portland are still in a strong position to clinch a 2023 MLS Cup playoffs spot with interim head coach Miles Joseph at the helm.
4. Ashley Westwood (vs Chicago Fire)
That's some strike from Ashley Westwood.
His strike helped propel Charlotte FC to a 2-0 win over Chicago Fire, and the North Carolina side are still alive in the playoff race with two games remaining in the regular season.
3. Cole Bassett (vs Houston Dynamo)
This seems like a case of Deja Vu, as we have another brilliant backheeled goal that comes as a consolation prize.
Cole Bassett snuck one past the Houston defense to give Colorado Rapids supporters something to cheer about, as they have missed out on the postseason with just 26 points 32 games played.
2. Mathieu Choiniere (vs Portland Timbers)
CF Montreal's Mathieu Choiniere scored his fifth goal of the campaign with a terrific finish to beat Portland's David Bingham at his near post.
The Canadian site will aim to hold on to eighth place in the Eastern Conference standings and secure a playoff spot in their final game of the season against Columbus Crew.
1. Brayan Vera (vs Sporting Kansas City)
Take a bow, Brayan Vera.
A center-back's strike tops the list this week, as there was nothing Sporting KC's Tim Melia could do to keep that one from finding the back of the net. RSL's comeback fell just short as they were defeated 3-2, but they'll be looking ahead as they've already clinched a playoff spot.
