The 10 Best Games of the 2019/20 Bundesliga Season

Another Bundesliga season has drawn to a close. Congratulations to Bayern Munich and commiserations to Fortuna Dusseldorf, Paderborn and maybe Werder Bremen, depending on how their relegation playoff goes.

Bayern's stranglehold over German football continued this campaign as they sealed an eighth straight title with a few games to spare.

This doesn't tell the whole story though. We were actually treated to a four horse race for top spot for much of the season. The emergence of Marco Rose's entertaining Borussia Monchengladbach side as genuine contenders was a particular highlight.

With a start date for the 2020/2021 campaign not yet confirmed, it may be some time until we get to enjoy Bundesliga action again.

Borussia Dortmund 5-1 Augsburg

What better place to kick off our list then with this cracker from matchday one.

Augsburg had survived relegation by the skin of their teeth during the 2018/2019 campaign and shocked gasps echoed around Signal Iduna Park when Florian Niederlechner put the visitors in front inside 60 seconds.

The visiting fans' excitement didn't last long as Dortmund proceeded to put the minnows to the sword in a swaggering display of attacking football.

Paco Alcacer scored the first goal of a brace to draw his side level two minutes later, before Jadon Sancho, Marco Reus and Julian Brandt also got on the scoresheet. It was a pulsating game that set the tone for the stylish, offensive combinations that Lucien Favre's team would showcase all season long.

RB Leipzig 8-0 Mainz

Regardless of your thoughts on RB Leipzig's murky history, there can be no denying that they are a beautiful team to watch.

There is no better example of Julian Nagelsmann's side ruthless effectiveness than their 8-0 demolition of Mainz back in November.

Excellent work from Timo Werner allowed Marcel Sabitzer to score the first of a flurry of goals in the fifth minute and Werner would go on to bag a hat-trick in one of the best performances of his career to date. Chelsea fans will be salivating while watching the highlights of this one.

Augsburg 3-5 Borussia Dortmund

Augsburg 3-5 Borussia Dortmund will go down in history as the day that Erling Haaland announced his arrival in the Bundesliga in typically imperious style.

With Dortmund trailing 3-1, Haaland was introduced as a substitute on the hour mark and promptly scored a 20 minutes hat trick.

If anyone didn't believe the hype surrounding the Norwegian, they certainly did after this game. Haaland showed every club who had been chasing him in January exactly what they'd missed out on.

Union Berlin 3-1 Borussia Dortmund

Every hipster's favourite football team Union Berlin secured their first ever Bundesliga win in memorable fashion, besting giants Dortmund 3-1 back in August.

Marius Bülter wrote himself into Union folklore by bagging the club's first ever top flight goal, which was then cancelled out by a Paco Alcacer strike.

In the second half the impossible happened. Bülter grabbed a fine second goal and human heading machine Sebastien Andersson sealed a famous victory with a tap-in 15 minutes from time.

The scenes after the final whistle were genuinely moving. Thousands of supporters jubilantly celebrating in a stadium that many of them had help build with their own two hands.

Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 Bayern Munich

Frankfurt's thrashing of Bayern Munich was more than a shocking result. It was also the moment that set Die Roten on the road to a potential treble, though it certainly didn't seem that way at the time.

By the time Goncalo Paciencia has scored the hosts' fifth goal, Bayern boss Niko Kovac would have already known that his time at the helm was coming to a close.

Under his replacement, Hansi Flick, the club has been rejuvenated and now looks likely to add a DFB Pokal to their trophy cabinet... and maybe even a Champions League?

Bayern Munich 4-0 Borussia Dortmund

Speaking of Hansi Flick, the tone for the German's hugely successful spell in charge of Bayern was set in his first game - a 4-0 Der Klassiker victory over Dortmund.

Die Roten were in turmoil prior to Flick's arrival so the fact that he managed to get such an accomplished performance from his players was nothing short of sensational.

The free scoring Robert Lewandowski grabbed two goals, while Serge Gnabry and a Mats Hummels own goal completed the rout.

Bayer Leverkusen 4-3 Borussia Dortmund

Bayer Leverkusen vs Borussia Dortmund looked like an exciting game on paper - due to both sides' open and attacking style - and it very much delivered on its promise.

By half time four goals had already been shared evenly, including one sumptuous strike from Emre Can.

Leverkusen eventually settled the contest with a dramatic two minute double salvo. Leon Bailey and Lars Bender scored in quick succession to earn Peter Bosz's side three points in what was probably the game of the season.

Borussia Dortmund 3-3 RB Leipzig

Dortmund and RB Leipzig treated fans to a Christmas cracker during the last gameweek before the winter break.

BVB twice enjoyed a two goal lead in the game but the defensive fragility that plagued them all season reared its ugly head again, with Patrik Schick completing the Leipzig comeback with just over 10 minutes to play.

The draw was not the result either side wanted and slip ups such as this are a big reason why Bayern eventually won the title at a canter.

Bayern Munich 6-1 Werder Bremen

If you ever overhear any blasphemers doubting Philippe Coutinho's ability, just show them the highlights from Bayern's 6-1 win over Werder Bremen.

The Brazilian was in inspired form, setting up two goals and scoring a hat-trick which included an audacious lob that is a contender for goal of the season.

That wasn't the only eye catching strike of the game however. Bremen's Milot Rashica unleashed an absolute thunderbolt to get the contest off to a flying start in the 24th minute. If you like great goals (and who doesn't right?) this is the game for you.

Bayer Leverkusen 2-4 Bayern Munich

The only behind closed doors game on our list, Leverkusen and Bayern played out an entertaining 4-2 that all but confirmed Die Roten's status as Bundesliga champions.

Lucas Alario put the hosts ahead, after some VAR controversy, before three goals in 15 minutes put Bayern 3-1 up at the break.

Robert Lewandowski then put the game beyond all doubt before Florian Wirtz grabbed a consolation for Leverkusen.
