Sporting Kansas City have clinched their bid for the 2021 MLS Cup Playoffs, and will fight for the top spot of the Western Conference table in their last match of the season.

Real Salt Lake are on the outside of the playoff picture, but with a win, can find their way into the postseason fold. It all comes down to this for the 2021 MLS season in this rivalry matchup.

Sporting KC have long had their playoff place secured, but in their final regular season contest, can move up to first place of the Western Conference. In order to get the top spot, it would require a win over Real Salt Lake, as well as a loss from Seattle Sounders. Any other result, and the Sounders are atop.

Following back-to-back losses, Real Salt Lake's chances to make the MLS Cup Playoffs are slim. The team is now two points below the playoff line. In order to make the playoffs, Real Salt Lake have to win in Kansas City. Any other result, and their season is over.

Real Salt Lake have a clean bill of health this week and with the season on the line, it will take an all-out effort from the whole roster.

Sporting Kansas City vs Real Salt Lake head to head record

In the all-time history of this Western Conference rivalry, Real Salt Lake hold a slight advantage with a 13-12-8 series lead. The teams met in the 2013 MLS Cup Final, with SKC lifting their second MLS Cup in a 1-1 (7-6) home win. In one previous meeting this season, RSL took home a 3-1 win in Utah on May 5th.

Both sides have something to play for in this rivalry renewal in the final week of the regular season. The usual intensity of this match will only be amplified by the circumstances of the season coming to a close. For Kansas City, a win could put them atop the conference for a second straight year, and for Salt Lake, anything but a win ends their season. But after back-to-back losses, it’s hard to see Salt Lake pulling off a win over a motivated Kansas City side.
