A resurgent Southampton host Brighton at St Mary's on Thursday evening, with the home side fresh off the back of snatching a last-gasp draw against Manchester United on Monday.

The Saints were the better side for large periods at Old Trafford, and came from behind to grab a point as their run of good form continues.

As for Graham Potter's side, their hopes of another season in the top-flight have been boosted by some crucial wins of late, including a controversial victory over Arsenal.

That being said, the Seagulls aren't mathematically safe just yet and will be feeling the effects of a dismal 5-0 defeat to Pep Guardiola's Manchester City at the weekend.

LATE, LATE drama ? #saintsfc

The hosts named an unchanged side for the third successive match at Old Trafford, and Ralph Hasenhuttl could perhaps be tempted to do the same on Thursday. That being said, Monday night's hero Michael Obafemi may have earned himself a recall to the starting XI, while defender Jack Stephens' shaky performance may see him drop to the bench.

For the away side, there will no doubt be a number of changes following the heavy loss to City, with the likes of Dan Burn, Tariq Lamptey and potentially Neal Maupay likely to be back in the starting lineup. As for injuries, Graham Potter is without any long-term absentees and should have a fully fit squad to choose from as the Seagulls look to secure their Premier League status.

Predicted Lineups

Southampton: McCarthy; Walker-Peters, Bednarek, Vestergaard, Bertrand; Redmond, Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Armstrong; Ings, Obafemi.

Brighton: Ryan; Lamptey, Duffy, Dunk, Burn; Mooy, Propper, Bissouma, Trossard; Connolly, Maupay.

Recent Form

A mightily impressive return to competitive action has seen the Saints topple the likes of Manchester City and Crystal Palace, continuing to harass opposing teams even while they have relatively little to play for in the league – barring the financial incentives offered by a higher league position.

Meanwhile, Brighton's form has been something of a mixed bag of late, with their victory over the Gunners somewhat overshadowed by defeats against United, City and champions Liverpool. Although they're not technically safe from the drop though, a gap of six points with just three games to go should see them through even if they struggle over the final fortnight.

Here's a look at both sides' last five fixtures.

Southampton

Manchester United 2-2 Southampton (13/07/2020)
Everton 1-1 Southampton (09/07/2020)
Southampton 1-0 Manchester City (05/07/2020)
Watford 1-3 Southampton (28/06/2020)
Southampton 0-2 Arsenal (25/06/2020)

Brighton

Brighton 0-5 Manchester City (11/07/2020)
Brighton 1-3 Liverpool (08/07/2020)
Norwich 0-1 Brighton (04/07/2020)
Brighton 0-3 Manchester United (30/06/2020)
Leicester 0-0 Brighton (23/06/2020)

Prediction

If their performance at Old Trafford is anything to go by, the Saints should be comfortable favourites for this clash and could well be a team to keep an eye out for next season, particularly with Danny Ings fit and firing once again.

For Brighton, Graham Potter's commendable style of play should be enough to see them avoid Championship football.

They just won't win this one.

Prediction: Southampton 3-1 Brighton
