Southampton have announced that head coach Ruben Selles will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The Spaniard was given his first job as a senior manager by the Saints when he replaced Nathan Jones in February, beginning his initial caretaker reign with a 1-0 win away at Chelsea.

Though Southampton performed admirably against some of the Premier League's toughest teams - including a 3-3 draw at then-table toppers Arsenal - they have been relegated to the Championship, ending their 10-year stay in the top flight.

Selles will take charge of Southampton's final game of the season at home to Liverpool on Sunday before departing.

In a statement, Southampton said: "Southampton Football Club can confirm that it has held conversations with Men’s First Team Manager, Ruben Selles, and decided that his contract will not be renewed when it expires at the end of the season.

"The club wants to place on record its thanks to Ruben for taking on the managerial position at a difficult time for the club and for giving his all as we attempted to stay in the Premier League.

"Ruben will take charge of the team for the final game against Liverpool on Sunday at St Mary’s. We wish him all the best for his future career."

90min recently reported that Russell Martin of Swansea City was the leading contender to take the job at Southampton, and sources have confirmed he is likely to make the move to St Mary's ahead of the 2023/24 season.
