Simeone Inzaghi's Inter travel to Ukraine to face Shakhtar Donetsk on matchday two of the Champions League group stage.

The Nerazzurri were beaten by Real Madrid 1-0 at San Siro on opening night, a deeply disappointing result considering the Italian champions had dominated for much of the game.

It extended their miserable run of Champions League performances since returning to the competition in 2018, but a win against Shakhtar would go a long way to helping them reach the knockout stages for the first time since the 2011/12 season.

Inzaghi's men come up against a familiar foe in Roberto De Zerbi, with the former Sassuolo boss taking charge of Shakhtar in the summer - they were beaten by group stage newcomers Sheriff on matchday one.

Here's everything you need to know ahead of this one.

Inzaghi will still be without key midfielders Arturo Vidal, Stefano Sensi and Christian Eriksen for the trip to Ukraine.

While they won't be available for this one, Gabriel Brazao and Joaquin Correa should be back in the fold following the October international break.

Shakhtar Donetsk vs Inter head-to-head record

This will be the third successive season in which Shakhtar and Inter have faced off in Europe.

The remarkable stretch began in the knockout stages of the 2019/20 Europa League, with the two meeting in the one-legged semi-finals staged in Germany. Braces from Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez helped the Italians to a 5-0 win that day.

They then met in the group stage of the Champions League last season, with two 0-0 draws being played out and preventing either side from advancing to the last 16.

Shakhtar and Inter's only other meetings came in the final qualifying round for the 2005/06 Champions League, and the Nerazzurri prevailed 3-1 on aggregate - the Miners are still looking for their first win against the Serie A champions.

Antonio Conte's reign at Inter was plagued by his inability to lead them back into the latter rounds of the Champions League, but if Inzaghi maintains their current form so far this season, they should return there in no time.

De Zerbi is still figuring out the kinks of his new side, as was demonstrated by their shock defeat at Sheriff. Shakhtar's quest for a first ever win against Inter looks set to go on.

Prediction: Shakhtar Donetsk 1-2 Inter
