Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets has admitted he would willingly hand over the captaincy to Lionel Messi if he returned to the club.

Messi's glittering 17-year Barcelona career came to an abrupt end last summer when he was forced to depart Camp Nou due to the Blaugrana's crippling financial situation.

The iconic attacker subsequently joined Paris Saint-Germain, although he has struggled to have anywhere near the same impact at Parc des Princes and rumours have begun to circulate about a potential return to Barça, who have since managed to balance the books somewhat.

Club captain Busquets - who assumed that role when Messi departed - has advocated for the Argentine's return, saying he would give the captaincy straight back.

“Messi’s departure was difficult, and it shocked us at first. Of course I would like Messi back, but he has a contract with another team," he told RAC1.

"It’s also complicated because of the way he left us. Nobody else has given us what Messi did. I miss him and I am sure he misses me too.

“Xavi said Messi’s doors are open to return, so imagine me as a teammate. I’ll give him the captain, he has my respect and admiration."

However, he may be disappointed as club president Joan Laporta has said Barcelona are 'not considering or contemplating' Messi's return.

On potential incomings at Barcelona, Messi aside, Busquets said: “I think something big is being built. If the economy allows it, we can make some good signings to complement this well-planned squad because there are many young players who have a great level."

Asked about his own future, with his contract due to expire in 2023, the 33-year-old added: “When my contract is over, I will decide what’s the best for me. If I’m good, I would want to stay. If not, I would accept that my time has come.

“I think I can still help the team. I have one more year left in my contract, and I will see what the coach and the club want then. I would never become a problem for Barça.

“I don’t see myself playing for another European team that is not Barça."
