Barcelona forward Sergio Aguero was taken to hospital for tests after becoming unwell in the first half of the club’s La Liga clash with Alaves at Camp Nou.

Aguero had to lie down on the pitch after appearing to be in distress, holding his chest, in the 41st minute. A stretcher was brought onto the pitch as he received attention from medical staff, although thankfully the Argentine was able to depart under his own strength.

Footage later showed an ambulance leaving Camp Nou, with Aguero transported to hospital, where he is expected to undergo tests.

Mundo Deportivo has reported that the problem had initially flared up during an aerial challenge with a rival player and, after first trying to continue, he had to lie down.

El Chiringuito has also reported that the reason for his withdrawal was as a result of a minor tachycardia, which is when is when a person’s heart rate becomes too fast. Journalist Jose Alvarez noted that Aguero is considered to be doing ‘fine’, but the action was precautionary.

Although his health and wellbeing are obviously the most important things, having to come off in the circumstances will come as a blow to Aguero. This was his first start at Camp Nou since joining Barcelona on a free transfer from Manchester City in the summer.

The 33-year-old has already missed two months of the season because of a calf injury he suffered before the new campaign began and would have been keen to make up for lost time.
