Sergio Aguero has taken an eye-watering 75% pay cut to join Barcelona this summer, it has been revealed.

The 33-year-old spent ten glorious years at the Etihad Stadium, but he left the Citizens at the end of the 2020/21 campaign, opting to sign for the cash-strapped Blaugrana on a free transfer.

Mundo Deportivo have revealed that Aguero had to accept a significantly reduced salary by around 75% in order to make the move to Catalonia, even rejecting a more lucrative offer from Juventus.

The Argentine was earning €23m gross at Man City, and he has had to take a cut of €17m, signing a €6m-a-year deal with Barcelona. Aguero was forewarned of the financial restrictions which the club was under, and he knew that he would not earn anything close to his previous wage in the Premier League.

A reduction in earnings is also understandable, given his advancing years. Aguero has just turned 33, meaning he is approaching the final years of his career at the top, and there are still question marks over whether he remains the elite striker of old.

The Man City legend scarcely featured for the Premier League champions last season, scoring only four goals in 12 league appearances, with two of those coming on the final day of the campaign.

The experienced forward will now be hoping to enjoy a much less injury-hit season in Spain, and return to reaching his typically prolific goal tallies at Camp Nou. Aguero has lit up La Liga in the past, having spent five years with Atletico Madrid before joining Man City in 2011.

In signing Aguero, Barça have finally replaced Luis Suarez, who they allowed to leave in the summer of 2020. The Uruguayan forward moved to rivals Atleti and fired them to La Liga glory last season, hitting 21 goals in a remarkable campaign.
