Seattle Sounders re-sign Fredy Montero for 2023 MLS season

Seattle Sounders have re-signed legendary forward Fredy Montero for the 2023 MLS season.
Montero had been available via free agency following the expiration of his previous contract, but signs a new one-year deal with the Rave Green. The new contract doesn't appear to hold an extension option beyond 2023.
Now 35 years old, Montero enjoyed a productive 2022 campaign in which he registered eight goals and two assists in 34 appearances across all competitions, helping the Sounders become the first-ever MLS club to win the Concacaf Champions League - a run in which he scored three goals.
“Fredy continues to prove he is a valuable player for our team, both on and off the field,” Sounders general manager and chief soccer officer Craig Waibel said in a club press release.
“On top of being a fan favorite, Fredy is a reliable goal-scorer, as demonstrated in his decorated career around the world. We welcome his skill, experience, and veteran leadership in 2023.”
Montero is in his second spell with the Sounders after spending four years with the club between 2009 and 2012. As the leading goalscorer in club history with 76 goals across all competitions, his status in Seattle is nothing short of legendary.
Between his two stints in Seattle, Montero - a four-time international for Colombia - has enjoyed productive stays with the Vancouver Whitecaps, Millonarios, Tianjin TEDA, and Portuguese giants Sporting CP.
The veteran forward will look to use his experience to guide the Sounders back into the MLS Cup Playoffs after missing out for the first time in club history last season.
